Poem for Silt Awareness Day
Thursday 21 May 2026
poetry
On Silt Awareness Day we gather,
To honour the quiet grains that slither,
Through river bends and quiet streams,
They paint the water with subtle schemes.
The silt, a humble traveller,
Carries stories of ancient gravel,
Whispers of erosion, soft and low,
A soft‑spun veil where currents flow.
We watch the water turn a milky hue,
A gentle cloud of ochre and blue,
And recognise the quiet art
Of sediment playing its part.
Let us protect the banks and beds,
Keep the silt where nature spreads,
For in its fine, unassuming grace
Lies the health of every watery place.
So raise a toast to silt today,
To the silent work it does each day,
And pledge to guard its humble trace
For rivers, seas, and future’s grace.
