The Battle of Evesham
The Battle of Evesham
Upon the fields where Severn bends,
The banners rose in brave array,
De Montfort’s host, with steadfast hearts,
Met Edward’s strength upon the fray.
Their spears a forest, bright and keen,
Clashed ’gainst the royal steel’s fierce gleam,
The thunder hooves of charging horse
Did shake the earth, a darkening dream.
Through smoke and dust the combat raged,
Each shield a wall, each sword a flame,
Till Prince Edward’s cavalry broke through,
Turning the tide to Edward’s name.
When dusk had drawn its sombre veil,
The field lay strewn with fallen brave,
De Montfort fell, his cause undone,
Yet honour lives in those who gave.
Now whispering winds o’er Evesham’s plain
Recount the clash of steel and crown,
A tale of valour, loss, and might—
Remembered still in Britain’s town.
