The Great Wi‑Fi Wrestle of ’23

Last summer I decided that the only thing standing between me and a blissful evening of binge‑watching was the stubborn router lurking in the corner of my flat. I imagined a quick reboot, a triumphant click, and then uninterrupted streaming of the latest British crime drama. What I got instead was a thirty‑minute saga that involved unplugging the modem, holding my breath while the lights flickered, and whispering sweet nothings to a device that seemed to understand only the language of frustration.

At one point, perched on the sofa with a screwdriver in one hand and a lukewarm cup of tea in the other, I realised I was treating the router like a temperamental houseplant – watering it with hope and hoping it would photosynthesise bandwidth. After a few muttered curses (all perfectly polite, of course, because I’m British) and a frantic Google search that led me to a forum where someone swore by turning the router upside down, I finally gave it a gentle spin. The lights blinked green, the internet sang, and I felt a surge of pride usually reserved for winning a pub quiz.

The lesson? Technology, much like the British weather, is fickle and best approached with a healthy dose of patience, a spare cup of tea, and the willingness to look a little ridiculous while you figure it out. And if all else fails, remember: sometimes the best fix is simply to turn it off, make a proper brew, and try again later – preferably when the rain has stopped and the neighbour’s Wi‑Fi isn’t stealing your signal.
