A Treat
In the hush of a rainy afternoon,
the kettle sighs, steam curling like a sigh,
and on the china plate rests a humble delight—
a warm scone, split, its crumb tender as a whisper.
Clotted cream, thick as the soft clouds over Dartmoor,
spreads in generous dollops, while strawberry jam,
bright as a summer hedgehog’s blush,
seeps into the fissures, sweet and earnest.
A pot of Earl Grey, bergamot’s citrus kiss,
steams beside, inviting a slow, contemplative sip.
Each bite is a small celebration,
a quiet rebellion against the day’s grey haste.
Here, in this modest ritual,
the world softens, edges blur,
and the simple act of sharing
becomes the truest treat of all.
