Usher
Sunday 5 December 2021
poetry
In the hushed half‑light of the theatre’s nave,
An usher glides, a quiet steward of the night,
His coat a shade of deep‑emerald, his steps suave,
He welcomes souls with patient, gentle light.
He ushers latecomers down the crimson aisle,
Each whisper of his shoes a soft assurance,
Guiding lost hearts to find their proper style,
Turning chaos into calm, a silent endurance.
In chapels bright or concert halls austere,
He reads the programme, knows each cue and pause,
His smile a beacon, sincere and sincere,
A humble keeper of the evening’s cause.
So raise a cheer for those who stand unseen,
The ushers who make order from the scene.
