Scoff

poetry

In the quiet of the pub, a scoff was heard,
A derisive laugh that slipped from cracked lips,
Like rain on cobblestones it stirred the curd
Of cheer, and turned the mirth to bitter strips.

But scoff can also mean a hearty bite,
A pie devoured with gusto, cheeks aglow,
Where hunger meets the simple, humble delight
Of food that fills and eases woe.

So let us scoff at pomp, yet scoff our fare,
Two sides of one small word, both humble, rare.
