Cumin

poetry
Cumin seeds, modest and brown,
nestle in the jar’s dim light—
a whisper of earth that rises
when toasted in a hot pan,
releasing a warm, smoky perfume
that drifts through the kitchen like
an old friend’s familiar tale.
In curry’s slow simmer, in spiced loaves,
it adds depth, a quiet backbone,
turning ordinary fare
into something remembered—
a hint of the Mediterranean sun,
a nod to Middle‑ Eastern spice markets,
all captured in a single pinch.
So here’s to cumin, humble yet bold,
the quiet catalyst that makes
flavour linger long after the last bite.
